Lab Experiments (Write protocols based on the videos then complete your protocols as you perform experiments in class):
- Making Indicator Solution
- Determining pH Using Indicator Solution
- Determining pH Using pH Paper
- Invisible Ink with Turmeric
Data analysis and calculations (Use these if you need help with your data and calculations)
pHExperimental Protocol
(Analysis) Write out the protocol for each part of the experiment. (It can be written in sequential steps. Complete sentences are not necessary.) This is the protocol you follow, so be detailed.
Chemical Table
(Representation) Prepare your chemical table including the materials you use in the experiment. Here is a general template that you may use.
Chemical Name | Chemical Formula | Molar Mass (g/mol) | Hazards | Reference | PPE |
Sodium Chloride | NaCl | 58.5 | Skin irritation | fishersci | |
Equipment Table
(Analysis) Identify the equipment (type AND size) needed for the experiment and include the name and an image (picture) of each.Be sure to describe the equipment, how to use it, and why it is suitable for this use.
Equipment Name | Equipment Picture | Intended Purpose |
Data Collection
(Acquiring competencies) Following your detailed protocol, perform all the experiments. Record your observations and take pictures of your key steps in the process. Your observations and images need to be incorporated in your data section and this section should be as detailed as possible as you will use this information to complete your discussion.
Tested chemical | Indicator color | Color of pH paper | pH value from pH paper |
Data Processing
- (Existing knowledge, research, and views) Define the characteristics of an acid.
- (Existing knowledge, research, and views) Define the characteristics of a base.
- (Existing knowledge, research, and views) Define what it means for a compound to be neutral.
- (Analysis) Identify the purpose of an indicator.
- (Analysis) Using the observations from your experiments with the indicator solution, classify your substances as acidic, basic, or neutral.
Tested chemical Indicator color Acidic, basic, or neutral by indicator - (Analysis) Using the observations from your experiments with the pH paper, classify your substances as acidic, basic, or neutral.
Tested chemical Color of pH paper pH value from pH paper Acidic, basic, or neutral by pH paper - (Assumptions) Fill in the following table using the data and observations from your experiment:
Assumptions made Testing the assumption If assumptions are wrong ... The distilled water is pure Evaporate it and check for residue
Discussion
Write a minimum one-page (12 font, single spaced) discussion on the experiment conducted this week. The assignment will be graded on completeness, clarity of the explanations and the meaningful integration of the collected and calculated data. Correct grammar and appropriate format for the chemical formulae and chemical reactions is expected.
- (Existing knowledge, research, and views) Identify the compound responsible for the pH for each of the tested substances using the scientific literature.
- (Existing knowledge, research, and views) Write the correct chemical formula for each of the tested substance.
- (Existing knowledge, research, and views) Identify the chemical species in the indicator that created the color.
- (Analysis) Identify the pH/pH range from the pH paper experiments corresponds to each color of the indicator.
- (Existing knowledge, research, and views) If red cabbage is not available, identify other substances could be used to prepare the indicator. Give at least 2 examples.
- (Analysis) Identified any properties other than pH that are similar among all your acids.
- (Analysis) Identified any properties other than pH that is similar among all your bases.
- (Analysis) Identify instances where the indicator and the pH paper results are in conflict. For any such instances, provide a supported argument for which result is more accurate.
- (Analysis) Identify any similarities and differences between metal oxides and bases.
- (Analysis) Identify the outcome with the magnesium oxide. Compare the result with the predicted outcome based on our discussion before the experiment.
- (Analysis) Identify any similarities and differences between metal oxides and bases.
- (Analysis) Identify the result when you blew through the straw into your test tube with the water and cabbage indicator in it. (Hint: you exhale carbon dioxide.) Explain your result.
- (Analysis) Explain the necessity to dry the paper in the invisible ink experiment.
- (Analysis) Predict whether the turmeric mixture would give the same result with any base, or was this experiment unique to the sodium carbonate solution.
- (Analysis) Provide a supported argument for what occurs when putting the base on paper. Identify the paper as acidic, basic, or neutral.
- (Analysis) Identify how turmeric might be used as acid-base indicator.
